Austria’s trade balance posted a deficit of EUR 0.23 billion in September 2025, shifting from a surplus of EUR 0.25 billion a year earlier. This marked the seventh consecutive month of trade deficit, as import growth outpaced exports. Imports expanded 6.5% year-on-year to EUR 16.79 billion, with higher purchases from both EU countries (+5.9%) and non-EU countries (+7.7%). Meanwhile, exports increased 3.2% year-on-year to EUR 16.56 billion, supported by shipments to both EU countries (+4.5%) and non-EU destinations (+0.4%). For January-September 2025 overall, international trade fell 2.2% compared with the same period last year. "This was mainly due to the increase in imports from Switzerland, which rose by almost two-thirds compared with the same period last year. The decline in exports is largely attributable to a 22.2% drop in shipments to the United States, Austria’s second-largest export partner after Germany," said Statistics Austria Director Manuela Lenk
