Food inflation in the Euro Area climbed to 13.8 percent year-on-year in September 2022, the highest on record, as the euro tumbled to 20-year lows and import prices surged. Prices increased at faster rates for all categories: bread and cereals (15.2 percent vs 14.2 percent in August); meat (13.8 percent vs 13.0 percent); fish and seafood (11.8 percent vs 11.3 percent); milk, cheese and eggs (19.6 percent vs 17.7 percent); oils and fats (29.6 percent vs 28.6 percent); fruit (7.1 percent vs 6.3 percent); vegetables (13.4 percent vs 9.3 percent); sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (8.8 percent vs 7.4 percent); and other food products (11.6 percent vs 10.8 percent) such as sauces and condiments, ready-made meals, salt, spices and culinary herbs, and baby food. Also, non-alcoholic beverages inflation has also accelerated to 10.1 percent from 9.4 percent in the previous month.
