Sri Lanka’s trade deficit widened sharply to USD 1,007.4 million in October 2025, compared with USD 544.4 million a year earlier, as a surge in imports outpaced a slight decline in exports. Total imports jumped 26.7% year-on-year to USD 2,156.8 million, driven by a 95.2% increase in consumer goods, led by a spike in personal vehicle purchases, alongside solid gains in investment goods (28.7%) and intermediate goods (7.6%). Exports slipped 0.7% to USD 1,149.4 million, as growth in agricultural shipments (4.2%) and mineral exports (11.1%) was outweighed by a 2.1% drop in industrial products, the country’s largest export category.
