Sri Lanka’s trade deficit widened to USD 540.3 million in June 2025 from USD 369.6 million a year earlier, as imports jumped 16.3% to USD 1.68 billion. The surge was mainly driven by a sharp increase in consumer goods, particularly personal vehicles (+2103.9%), telecom devices (+159.1%), household and furniture items (+106.2%), and food and beverages (+212.4%). Vehicle imports alone totaled USD 163 million in June, pushing total vehicle imports for the first half of 2025 to USD 475 million. Exports rose at a slower pace, up 6% to USD 1.14 billion, led by higher shipments of industrial (+6.4%) and agricultural (+5.5%) goods, while mineral exports declined by 29%.
