Construction spending in the United States shrank by 0.5% month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2,196.1 billion in March 2025, after a downwardly revised 0.6% increase in February and defying market forecasts of a 0.2% rise. Homebuilding is being constrained by high mortgage rates and tariffs on imports that are driving up construction costs. Private sector spending declined by 0.6% in the period, pulled down by a 0.8% drop in non-residential investment and a 0.4% fall in the residential segment. Meanwhile, public spending edged down 0.2%, primarily due to a drop in the non-residential segment, with significant reductions in power (-4.8%), commercial (-1.6%), and amusement and recreation (-1.0%) offsetting stronger increases in office (+1.6%) and transportation (+1.4%). The residential sector, however, saw a 0.2% rise. On a yearly basis, construction spending grew by 2.8% in March.
