Construction spending in the United States fell by 0.4% month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2,152.4 billion in April 2025, after a revised 0.8% decrease in March and against market forecasts of a 0.3% rise. Homebuilding continues to be weighed down by higher borrowing costs, rising input prices due to import tariffs, and growing inventories. Private sector spending declined by 0.7% in the period, with the residential segment falling by 0.9%, driven by new single-family projects (-1.1%). Nonresidential construction spending fell 0.5%, with religious buildings seeing the sharpest drop at 2.6%. Meanwhile, public spending edged up 0.4%, driven by a 0.5% increase in the nonresidential sector, primarily commercial (+3.8%), healthcare (+3.3%) and office (+1.2%). The residential segment, however, recorded a 0.6% fall. On a yearly basis, construction spending shrank by 0.5% in April.
