The New York Empire State Manufacturing Index dropped to -16 in June 2025 from -9.2 in May, well below market expectations of -5.5, signaling a further deterioration in business conditions across New York State. This marked the weakest reading since March’s two-year low of -20. Key indicators showed broad-based weakness: new orders and shipments declined, supply availability worsened, and delivery times were largely unchanged. Inventories saw little movement. On the labor front, employment edged higher for the first time in several months, while the average workweek remained steady. Input cost pressures eased somewhat but remained elevated, whereas selling price increases accelerated. Despite the current weakness, firms expressed improved confidence about the future, with the index for general business conditions turning positive for the first time since March.
