Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices in the United Kingdom increased by 4.0% year-on-year in March 2024, a decline from the 5.0% recorded in February, marking the slowest pace of increase since November 2021. This downward trend reflects the 12th consecutive month of easing rates, following a recent peak of 19.1% in March 2023, the highest annual rate seen in over 45 years. Notably, the deceleration in costs was particularly evident for items such as bread and cereals, which rose by 4.0%, the lowest increase since January 2022, driven by prices of some bakery products, such as chocolate biscuits and crumpets. Meat prices rose by 3.1%, the softest pace since November 2021, due to the easing in the rate came from pork products. Overall, the annual rate decreased in 10 of the 11 food and non-alcoholic beverages categories, with vegetables, hot beverages, and soft drinks being the exceptions.
